Department Training Progresses
SEPTEMBER 10 - On Sunday, September 10th,
attended a pump operations training session at
Station 20.  Utilizing engine tankers 220 and 420,
members honed their skills pumping water from a
nearby creek, relaying it from one truck to the other,
and distributing it through hoses of varying
diameters.  The training was designed to simulate
the type of work exterior firefighters must perform
during a structure fire.  The training was merely one
session in a series in which members participated
during the summer.  The series included SCBA,
ladder, driving, and infectious control training and
drills.  The extensive training is the department's
way of ensuring that members are prepared to
respond effectively in an emergency.

Family Fun Day a Success
SEPTEMBER 17 - On Sunday, September 17th, the Ashford
Volunteer Fire Department joined with groups from throughout
Ashford to participate in the town's annual Family Fun Day at
Pompey Hollow Park.  As is custom, the department cooked
hamburgers and hot dogs for the crowd as its way of saying
thank you for all the support the town and its citizens have
given the department.  The event also provided the department
with an opportunity to disseminate information about the
services it provides and to encourage citizens to join its ranks.
Special thanks to David Thibault for the use of his grilling
services and to all those department members who pitched in
to make the event a success.
Ashford Fire Launches New Website
SEPTEMBER 19 - On Monday, September 19th, the
Ashford Volunteer Fire Department launched its new
website.  The department made extensive changes not
purpose of the change is to make the site more
user-friendly and informative to the general public as well
as to department members.  The site does not yet contain
all the content the department intends it to but is expected
to be completed within the next month.

Fire Prevention Week Is Here
OCTOBER 8-14 - Fire Prevention Week is October 8 to 14.
Originally proclaimed as Fire Prevention Day in 1920 by
President Woodrow Wilson, it commemorated the
anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.  In 1925,
President Calvin Coolidge expanded the event to a whole
week.  This year's theme is the prevention of cooking fires.
To spread the message about fire safety, the Ashford
Volunteer Fire Department will be hosting a group of
elementary school children at Station 20 on Thursday,
October 13.  In addition, the following day, the department
will participate in a fire prevention event at Ashford School.

Two More Fires Keep AVFD Busy
OCTOBER 30 – At about 9 p.m. Monday, Ashford
Cumberland Farms on Route 44.  With the
assistance of departments from surrounding
towns, the AVFD quickly knocked it down before it
could engulf nearby structures.  One firefighter
was treated for minor injuries.  This was the
second structure fire in a week (and the fifth this
month) to which the department has been
dispatched.  Last Wednesday, at about 1 p.m.,
the department was dispatched to Mansfield to
assist its department battle a fire that consumed
an outdoor shed or playhouse.  Police are
investigating whether all five fires, three of which
have been ruled arson, are linked.

Ladder Safety Week
NOVEMBER 12-18 - Ladder Safety Week is November 12 to 18.
A new national survey shows that 4 out of 5 U.S. households
plan to use ladders around their homes to prepare for the
holiday season.  As people begin climbing this holiday season,
so will their risk of injury if they don't keep in mind proper ladder
safety practices.  On average, 150,000 ladder injuries are
reported in the U.S. annually.  That statistic is not surprising.
The survey revealed that 52 percent of respondents worked on
uneven ground when decorating outside; 47 percent reach
further than they should when decorating around windows; and
38 percent decorate outside after dark.  For tips on the safe use
of ladders, click

holiday season.
FEMA Grants Ashford Fire $71,820
DECEMBER 1 - On December 1, 2006, the Federal
Emergency Management Agency (part of the U.S.
Department of Homeland Security) awarded the Ashford
Volunteer Fire Department $71,820 to replace 16 aging
self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBAs). SCBAs are
vital to a firefighter's ability to enter a burning structure to
They protect firefighters from super-heated toxic gas and
smoke and provide them with up to 30 minutes of
breathable air.  The old SCBAs were about 15 years old
and quite heavy, weighing as much as 35 pounds.  The
department's new units are considerably lighter and meet
current safety requirements.  The department will
contribute $3,780 toward the purchase of the new
equipment.  The grant is the result of the department’s
continuing effort to seek funds from sources other than the
taxpayers of Ashford.

AVFD Battles Lake Chaffee Fire
January 29 - At about 2:30 p.m. on Monday,
the Ashford Volunteer Fire Department was
dispatched to a house fire on Union Drive in
the Lake Chaffee area of town.  The fire was
reported by a neighbor.  None of the
residents--Margaret James and four children--
within about 10 minutes of the call.  With the
assistance of firefighters from surrounding
towns, the AVFD fought for an hour to contain
the blaze.  Despite that effort, the house was
destroyed.  The fire started near an electrical
panel on the lower level of the home. About a
year ago, Mrs. James lost her husband to
cancer.  It has also been reported that the
family did not have homeowner's insurance.
A fund to assist the family has been established at New Alliance Bank.  Those wishing to donate
to it can do so at any branch or mail donations to New Alliance Bank, c/o James Family Fund, 6
Storrs Road, Willimantic, CT 06226.  More information about the fire can be found
here and here.
AVFD Budget Request Down Next Year
MARCH 1 - While most department budgets in town
are going up next year, the Ashford Volunteer Fire
Department submitted a request to the Town of
Ashford for an appropriation 0.5 percent lower than it
received this year.  The department arrived at the
requested amount despite including additional
spending to replace outdated equipment, including
firefighter bunker gear and hoses.  What made this all
possible was the revenue generated from billing
medical insurance companies for ambulance transports.  The billing program was intended to
enable the department to replace its ambulance every four years without any cost to Ashford
residents.  It has exceeded expectations and will allow the department to self-fund a portion of its
emergency medical service, further reducing the financial burden on the taxpayers.
AVFD Opens New Station
APRIL 1 - On Sunday, April 1, 2007, the
Ashford Volunteer Fire Department
officially opened its third firehouse.  The
new station, dubbed Station 120, is
located off of Boston Hollow Road in
the Yale-Myers Forest.  The station
contains a 2,000 square foot,
state-of-the-art gymnasium and a
25-yard, indoor swimming pool to help
members stay in shape and provide them a place to relax and unwind after responding to
emergency calls.  In the department's continuing effort to save the taxpayers of Ashford money, the
$7.2-million-dollar project was funded entirely by the sale of butter braids.  The station will also

slowed traffic on Route 44 for more than an
hour.
AVFD Battles Wildfires
MAY 9 - At about 9 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9, the
Ashford Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched
to Willington to help battle a wildfire in the woods off
of Balazs Road.  Ten AVFD firefighters worked into
the night cutting a path through the woods to stop
the spread of the fire.  This was the second wildfire
the AVFD fought in a week.  On the previous
Saturday afternoon, members assisted firefighters
from Union battle a blaze in the hills north of the
weigh station along Interstate 84.  The Connecticut
Department of Environmental Protection currently rates the risk of wildfires as high.  Please use
caution.  To view the DEP's fire report, go

AVFD Marches on Memorial Day
MAY 29 - On Monday, May 29, members of
the AVFD marched in Ashford's annual
Memorial Day parade.  Led by 10 members
in formal dress, the entire contingent of
department apparatus proceeded from
Station 20, past town hall, to the town green
outside the Senior Center.  There, First
Selectman Ralph Fletcher led the event
honoring those who died serving our nation.

Honda Accord attempted to pass another vehicle in a
no-passing area and lost control of the car.  Including the
driver, the car had five occupants ranging in age from 15 to
22 years old, all of whom were Massachusetts residents.
All the occupants were injured.  The driver and a teenage
passenger were flown by Lifestar helicopter to Hartford
Hospital, which has a trauma center.  Meanwhile, the other
three occupants were driven there by ambulance, including
