FIRE SAFETY SHOPPING LIST

According to the Home Safety Council’s State of Home Safety in America™ Report, fires and
burns are the third leading cause of unintentional home injury and related deaths. Fire safety
and survival begin with everyone in your household being prepared.

Knowing which safety products to buy to make your home safer can be confusing, so the
Home Safety Council has created the Fire Safety Shopping List to point out important safety
products every home should have. Remember that installing home safety products and
applying safe practices is the best combination to help prevent injuries in the home. If you
can’t buy everything at one time, start out with essentials and then add a few product
solutions as you can. Most of these items can be found at your local home improvement
retailer.

Fire Safety Products
  • Smoke alarms: Purchase one for each level of the home and one for each room where
people sleep.  Consider purchasing interconnect smoke alarms. These can be wired into
household electricity, or new technology makes it possible to interconnect the alarms with
wireless connections.  For people with hearing problems, purchase ones that use strobe
lights and/or vibration in addition to a loud siren.  Everyone must be able to respond quickly
to the smoke alarm. This item may be purchased at local retailers but you may have to ask
for help in finding it or special-ordering it.
  • Batteries for all smoke alarms: Even hard-wired smoke alarms need back-up batteries, in
    case of a power outage.
  • Fire escape ladders: Purchase non-combustible escape ladder(s) for 2nd or 3rd-story
sleeping areas.  Be sure to purchase a ladder long enough for the height of the room.
  • Fire extinguisher
  • First-aid kit
  • Fire-proof safe for important documents and papers
  • Flashlights
Be sure to read and follow all manufacturers’ installation instructions. Ask your home
improvement store manager if you have any questions about how to install these life-saving
products.

For Added Fire Safety
  • Home fire sprinkler system: If you are building a new home or renovating your existing
home, consider installing a fire sprinkler system. Fire sprinklers automatically detect a fire
and put water on the flames to extinguish or control fire, heat and smoke. Fire sprinklers
    save lives and property.

Burn Prevention Products
  • Oven mitts and pot holders
  • Outlet covers for homes with young children
  • Anti-scald device for water faucets: This item may be purchased at local retailers but you
may have to ask for help in finding it or special-ordering it.
