A Spark Ignites: The Birth of Ashford Volunteer Fire Department
On a chilly January 20th, 1950, a determined group of veterans from Ashford Post 1150 gathered at the Ashford Village schoolhouse with a mission: to protect their beloved town. Their vision took shape on March 15th when they acquired a vintage 1918 Seagrave fire engine from New London Company 2, marking the official birth of the Ashford Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD).
This historic fire truck found its temporary home in a lone garage at the heart of Ashford, patiently awaiting the construction of a new fire station. Fast forward to May 1953, the town generously leased a piece of land to the AVFD for the symbolic price of $1.00 for the next century. The community's support didn't stop there; in September 1953, the town sold the Warrenville schoolhouse to the AVFD for another dollar, paving the way for the new firehouse.
By the following year, the AVFD proudly moved into their remodeled firehouse on Route 89, with John Kuchinsky stepping up as their first Fire Chief. This momentous journey from a schoolhouse meeting to a fully operational fire department showcases the unwavering spirit and dedication of the Ashford community.
We are always looking for new volunteers in Firefighting, Emergency Medical Services, and Support Operations. There are many ways you can help! For more information on how to join, email membership@ashfordfire.org or stop by the station to pick up an application and talk with the duty crew.
